In Vein

By Luci Moody

A dead body breathing strolled the path down Aurora Avenue. Her skin burned, tingling, peeling from the long trek without sunscreen. Heart rate accelerated. She could almost taste the vinegar. Heroin. Oh, sweet heroin. She’d feel alive soon.

In that dealer’s car, she could wait no longer. Spoon? Check. Syringe? Yes. Frantically boiled water splattered onto her hand, shit, she said, what a waste. Into the cooker it goes, sucked up, tapped, bubbles gone.

Arm going numb from such a tightly-wound tourniquet, the needle dangled from clenched teeth. Liquid relief found its way into her blood stream. Now, she could breathe.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Powerful stuff. Wonderful cautionary tale. Makes me doubly grateful that I was never tempted to try illegal drugs!

Been there, except boiling water no longer needed. Excellent piece.
