Indifference

November 13, 2024 11 Comments

By Kelly Matsuura

Half-finished canvases face the wall. When did I last look at them with any vision or fervor? I stand to go look at one, but sit back down, defeated. I close my artist’s box and return it to the cupboard. I want to paint again, truly. Just not today.

I can paint beauty or anger or sadness, but I cannot paint indifference. I can’t live with it beside me, either. Why doesn’t he try?

Life is endless winter. Colors fade around me and I feel disconnected. My soul stops looking out the window and stares only at the closed front door.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Wow! Great description of the melancholy that envelops you when lose motivation to do what you enjoy most and become disconnected from your feelings. As a disabled vet, I know the feeling all too well.

It’s so incredible how someone’s indifference is just so powerful. It sucks away our passions from our creative womb.
