Insomnia

Insomnia

By Crystal Avila

We lay in bed silent in the darkness, both facing the chipping ceiling, not even our fingertips touching. But you were awake. I could feel you thinking.

Yesterday you were cooking and realized we were out of tomato sauce after putting the pasta to boil. You cried yourself to sleep.

And one night I heard you praying quietly when you thought it was safe. You spoke to the chipping ceiling like it was God.

After that I started to face the ceiling too.

After that I started to stay awake.

And I pray too now. Please let me see you naked.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Very well done Crystal. We all pray, but seldom for what someone else wants. You nailed the suprise ending.
