I stepped back and a host of medics rushed forward. Nurses pushed needles into unresisting veins and air was rhythmically pumped into the lifeless body as electrodes carried vital information to the expectant monitor.
Clear, came the call and then, a moment later, the body spasmed. All eyes flicked to the screen, waiting, hoping. Over and over they tried, but each time the thin flat line remained. Eventually, they stepped back, defeated.
Gently stroking that familiar face, I said, “It’s time for us to part; goodbye, old friend.”
As I turned towards the light I thought, I wonder what comes next.
Very good story. I’m sure all of us have had to let go of friends, loved ones, etc., and wondered, “I wonder what comes next.” This one has the ring of universal truth.

So the “I” is the deceased. Lovely.
Thank you.
So nicely done! Calm, realistic (I guess ;-)) and believable. I really liked it and I loved the way he parted with himself – nothing mawkish or spooky.
Thank you, I’m very glad you enjoyed it and much appreciate the kind comments.
