Is Daddy Sleeping?

April 19, 2021 6 Comments

By Tom Shanahan

I heard her outside my window. I was asleep before. Tomorrow would be my birthday. Mommy’s outside. I am upstairs in my bed. She’s all the way down there. She’s close to the house, so I can’t see her. I stand on my bed to look out. Press my face against the window. I see her. “Is daddy sleeping?” I don’t hear him. I don’t know. Why is mommy outside? She sounds scared. I fall back asleep. I wake up later. This time mommy’s stroking my forehead and staring at my face. She smiles. “Everything is good. Go back to sleep.”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Excellent. The kind of story that can be read over and over again.

I have read it several times but I don’t understand the story. What am I missing?

Have to agree I didn’t understand what is happening, it was like I missed something important but on rereading I was no clearer. Maybe it was the 100 word format – needed a few more sentences.

Needs more clarity. Either she was hiding from an abusive husband or she killed him and buried him in the yard. Makes a difference how it makes me feel.

It could be murder, he could have left her; he may have died in his sleep. We will never know. It makes you think.

Interesting with a taste of curiosity.
