Jesus in the Carpet

November 24, 2024 6 Comments

By Christie Walker Bos

Late afternoon sunshine streams through the window. Bright light on a patch of multicolor carpeting casts miniature shadows between the strands of yarn like shadows in a forest. On my knees, I peer under the coffee table looking for whatever is driving my dog crazy. A squeaky toy, no doubt.

Then I see him—Jesus. Dark hair and beard, benevolent eyes, an understanding mouth. A trick—light hitting shades of brown and tan. I look away, then back.

“Jesus Christ!”

He’s still there. Should I take a picture? Call the press? The light fades. Jesus dissolves. Buster stops barking.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

    Hello Christie,
Excellent story, and the climax, although not a shocker because of the revealing title, was great.

I love everything about this, especially the dual purpose exclamation, “Jesus Christ!”

Yes, I’ve heard that people have seen Jesus in a tortilla. I’ll be on the lookout.
