Library Steps

March 16, 2017 4 Comments

By Fred Vogel

As I watch the old guy slowly making his way down the library steps, probably wishing both the railing and his hands were lined with Velcro, I realize that before long it would be me being watched by a much younger person as I struggle to regain my youthful balance. Sooner than I care to admit, that old guy will be me. Hell, he already is me, left with little more than a long past and a short future. The past: exaggerations we cling to; the present: cherishing those exaggerations; the future: trying desperately just to hold on to the railing.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Mr. Vogel, maybe I’m just getting used to your writing. Ha,ha. Instead of reacting with ‘agism, demeaning,’ as I did with IN THIS CORNER, my reaction this time, as a not so young reader, was ‘truthful and tempered with a healthy humor’. Please keep writing. Benita
