
He’d never had his ass kicked.
Sure, he’d been in fights.
Kid stuff.
This was different.
He was taken completely by surprise, knocked to the sidewalk before he really knew what was happening.
Instinctively, he curled up in a ball, the ridiculous image of a roly-poly beetle flitting through his mind.
When the guy began kicking him he knew that it wasn’t going to stop.
He was surprisingly detached.
There go my front teeth.
I wonder if I will have a limp.
There was pain, sure, but it seemed far away.
One thing for certain: he was living in the now.
