Bert watched his aide Nancy light the Christmas tree. The bulbs blinked red and green in sequence. The kitchen smelled of fresh vegetables, and the scent of turkey cooking in the oven filled the air. The table was set with Margie’s fine china and silverware. Bert didn’t understand the fuss.
It’d been one year since Bert’s wife Margie passed away from cancer. Although he had twenty-four-hour care, he was still lugubrious. His mobility had decreased with the advancement of Parkinson’s, and he needed a walker to get from one room to the other.
Life and Christmas made minuscule sense to Bert.
Easy to visualize old Bert hunched over taking it all in. Nicely done.
Loved your story. It was touching and powerful.
