Long Distance

November 15, 2025 12 Comments

By Jim Pownall

At 2 a.m., I text you. All the way in Dhaka.

You respond, asking the latest news.

I explain I’m a mess.

You’re always a mess. Ever since we met. You can’t blame the pandemic now. Let me guess—you’re single again?

As of yesterday, I say.

We’ve had this chat before, she says. It always ends, and you get in touch after.

But this time it’s different. I’m thinking, if we’re single in five years, we get married.

See, whenever this happens, you reach out. Maybe ask how I am next time.

I put my phone down, await tomorrow’s hangover.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Very well written! It encapsulates perfectly the relatable vulnerability encountered at the end of a love.

I absolutely love this. It pulls you in from the very first sentence, tugs at your heart strings, and then delivers a twist with the final word that makes you smile and feel sadness at the same time. Cant wait to hear more!
