Mansplaining 101

November 15, 2022 15 Comments

By Peggy Gerber

Lynne scrubbed her husband’s brand-new coffee stain from the carpet as Dave barked instructions from the sofa. “Don’t forget to spray the remover, brush aggressively, then spray it again.”

Eight-year-old Arielle wrinkled her forehead. “Grandma, I’ve seen you clean stains off the carpet loads of times. Why is Grandpa giving you directions?”

Lynne looked up. “It’s called mansplaining, honey. Men can’t help it. It’s in their DNA.”

Arielle’s brother Max tapped her shoulder. “Sis, mansplaining is explaining things to women in a way they can understand.”

Arielle helped her grandmother finish up. Dave and Max shook their heads in unison. “Women!”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

My husband is also called John and he just told me to stop talking (I dared to utter one sentence) because I “am taking up too much airspace.”
