Marks

By Iona Winter

We met at the pub.

Next morning, he suggested breakfast.

“Eggs?”

I cooked, we ate and he disappeared.

But he’d marked my neck with a crown-shaped bruise.

Then I couldn’t sleep much.

So I visited Granny and her lush herb garden. Granny says she was burnt at the stake in a past life.

“Go and put your feet in the soil, Lucy,” she said.

“Okay.”

It wasn’t an unusual request. I wandered outside. Granny followed.

She held my hand and my vision clouded.

“Lucy?” she said.

“Mmm?”

“Who was it that bit you?”

I followed her finger—and the bruise pulsed.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Nice Iona. Bruise pulsed stayed with me. Good active verb choices throughout.

Methinks Dracula or one of his minions hath been here! A very good story. Especially liked the current incarnation of Granny. It lent a bit of levity to the darker aspects of the story.

Incredible character build up for granny using so few words. A witch/herbalist/burnt at the stake in a previous life – and the fact that that’s just accepted as granny.
    Wonderful work.
