Match Days

By Anna Sanderson

“Come on,” Claire shouted at the TV screen. She was perched on her sister Helen’s sofa, fists clenched by her sides. “Just take a shot!”

“No wonder Rob always watches football at the pub,” Helen laughed. “Why do you get so worked up?”

“Because I care.”

“You never used to.”

After the game, Claire hugged Helen goodbye. Safe in her arms, she thought about the night ahead. Each defeat brought the same: Rob’s return from the pub, deflated and moody; his angry words.

If Helen noticed Claire sigh, she didn’t mention it. But she’d mention Claire’s bruises tomorrow. She always did.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

The comments bother me even more than the story. Like women accept this as almost normal and expected behaviour. Boy, do we have a long way to go.

This is sad. It makes me think losing at sports makes him a very poor sport which is just wrong.
