Mint Creams

January 15, 2022 11 Comments

By Wendy Taylor

Red-faced, eyes scrunched shut, tears rolling down cheeks, she pushes away from me. Her wails pierce my heart. I try to hold her close, but to no avail. She pushes away harder.

Once I was the center of her universe. I was all she wanted. All she needed.

I heat a bowl of mashed vegetables and a cup of milk.

The sobbing subsides. Gleefully, she opens her mouth. Greedy gulps. Her satisfied smile.

“Clever girl,” I say.

That night I put my maternity bras in a bag to take down to the charity shop, then consume a whole box of chocolates.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

I needed to read this more than once because there is so much depth to it. The words took me back to my own experience of motherhood!
