Modern Man

Modern Man

By Philip James Sterwerf

Joey admits he is sexually attracted to the common housefly.

He explains:

“I start my day by leaving turds in the toilet. They like my product so I let them feast. I prefer pancakes but they prefer batter. It’s almost the same thing, so I don’t mind making the compromise.

“I watch the clock at work. The few flies who’ve hatched there dance around it. I long for lunch. When I eat alone at the table, crumbs tumble out of my mouth. I love the way they clean my messes.”

Joey’s flies fly all night; they will never really love him.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Interesting. If it were I (me?), I’d cut off those ungrateful flies.
