Momentary Trance

Momentary Trance

By Zane Castillo

Her gentle swaying at the intersection made him stop abruptly on the sidewalk. She wore large headphones that covered portions of her disheveled hair. Her eyes were closed and her head moved from side to side as if caught in an otherworldly trance. Her hands tapped out a sporadic beat against her sides.

Her lips began to move slowly at first, then increased in speed. He watched her with a growing anticipation that left him utterly glued in place. Suddenly, her mouth opened wide and she vehemently sang out lyrics to a song he never heard before but wished he had.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

I’m right there, at that intersection, I can’t take my eyes off her.

    Great read.

What a great little story, Zane! You’ve done a lot with a little and the ending is just perfect.
Funnily, when this showed up in my inbox all I could see of it was “Her gentle swaying at the intersection made him…” My first thought was that he was watching her swaying her, you know, personal intersection. Hrmm. Guess I need to get out more often. Anyway, great snapshot of the view through someone else’s eyes.
