“Is your latest girlfriend deaf? You seem to communicate by signs with her.”
“Yes, Mum, but sign language is an essential part of my course.”
Both answers were true; Jill had a hearing problem.
“I want complete silence during this exam, no talking.” The examiner’s ears picked up the slightest sound, all mouths forced shut.
Passing the test was required for me to teach. That’s where Jill came in—an expert in sign language. Dependable Jill signed me the answers.
All went well until the relief examiner entered, wearing a hearing aid. The finger on his lips meant more than silence.
An interesting story. Funny and sad, with a surprise ending.
I remember taking up various creative ways to pass or receive the answers during my school life.
