Must Be Real

September 11, 2025 6 Comments

By Susmita Ramani

“I always thought this was one of those places where women go to get their hair blown out,” Lola says.

“Oh, I knew it was a bar,” Burt says. “But I’m surprised they only serve beer. Do you even like beer?”

She shrugs. “Not always, but this one’s okay, especially after squeezing in the lemon wedge.”

Three beers later, they’re kissing. He teases, “How do I know you really like me, and it isn’t just beer goggles?”

Overhearing this, the bartender laughs. “You realize everything we serve is non alcoholic, right? Our liquor license never came through. Hence, the name: Dry Bar.”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.
