My Dog Hates the Smell of Food Frying Because It Sets Off the Fire Alarm

June 3, 2025 2 Comments

By S.O. Baran

The smell of frying bacon wakes him. He trembles where he stands inside his fortress: a kitchen table enclosed by chairs.

The smoke is thick. Unacceptable. The sizzle precedes his life’s greatest enemy.

The dreaded Beep Beep Beep!

In a feat of monumental bravery, he leaves the fortress, finds a human, and leeeeeeeans his weight against their legs. He hurries to the door. Stares at the doorknob, stares at the human. Doorknob. Human. Doorknob. Human.

The human sighs, clips the leash on his collar, and saves him from the Beep Beep Beep! by taking him out for a Sunday morning walk.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.
