“What? I wasn’t even near it. Fluffy probably did it.”
I was four years old and an accomplished liar.
By third grade, I knew which lunch sacks would have the best treats. By fifth grade, I could pull a fire bell and disappear like a ghost.
By tenth grade, I still went to bed at nine o’clock, slipped out the window to meet my guy, and was back in bed precisely by eleven p.m.
Bored, I quit school and lost the guy. Then, by chance—
“Hello, darlin’. My name’s Clyde.”
