New Romance

By Avra Margariti

“Where’s the condom?”

He only smiles, all boy-next-door dimples. “I don’t like the sensation of latex against skin.”

I’m a lady about it. I pull on my dress, sling my bra over one shoulder, fix my lipstick. He stands there, naked as a newborn rat, shriveled like a dried plum. On my way out I pause; he squirms under my stare.

His car is red and shiny: a cherry waiting to be popped. I key its side and ruin the paintwork. All the while looking like a lady.

If anyone asks, I’ll say I like the sensation of metal against chrome.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

I guess at least one male response is required. I don’t get’ where the chrome fits in (that’s not meant to be a sexual innuendo).. Jerry

Good job. Your full-story arc takes us from about-to-have-sex to “metal against chrome.” Love & revenge are two strong themes in flash fiction.
