“Niels is the best,” John said.
“He’d better be, for what we’re paying!”
Niels, who collected his fee in person, spotted our greeting sign.
“Hey, guys,” Niels said. “I paid a stewardess to ‘fix’ his drink.”
“He’s boarding his plane,” I said, and Niels made a brief call. “Your cousin will soon have a fatal heart attack at 32,000 feet. No inheritance from Grandfather Clarence now.”
We then made our way to the airport bar to celebrate our good fortune, feigning shock at what we’d inherit when ‘something’ happened to Carl. Life was full of surprises. That’s why we had Niels.
Naturally I was thinking of Niels Bohr, who incidentally could erstwhile have been hired to perform quantum chicanery, though not necessarily in service of aerial hijinks.
Thanks for the comment, exiledprospero! You are very erudite today, sprinkling about all those multi-syllable words. No problem. My Webster’s Dictionary allowed me to (finally) fathom the depths of your scholarly prose.
Why not turn your remarks into a short story. I think I would like it!
A 101 word critique. What an idea!
Enjoyed the story!
