Night Diver

Night Diver

By Lorell Hernandez

At the end of the pier, a hunchback figure swung a lantern in smiley-face arcs, illuminating the dark.

Suddenly, the water churned as silver coins cascaded on a rising female form with a swishing tail. Two long, lithe arms shimmered as they reached out and wrapped around the neck of the searcher. In silence, the pair submerged, swallowed by quickly calming water.

Old Mr. Wilson, the convenience-store clerk, made his way home, stowed his diving gear, and went to bed with a smile on his face. What makes that old geezer so damned happy? wondered an envious co-worker the next day.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Great story! The juxtaposition of an ordinary guy and his exotic tryst is fun and amusing, but also somehow poignant at the same time.
