Not Really

February 19, 2024 9 Comments

By Peggy Gerber

Marley was in the hardware store searching for Drano when her neighbor tapped her on the shoulder and exclaimed, “Hey, Marley, I haven’t seen you around lately. How are you?”

How am I? she thought to herself, blood pressure rising. Well, my husband’s cancer is back, his new medication is priced like gold, I found vaping paraphernalia in my son’s sock drawer this morning, and I’m so anxious I can barely breathe. Plus, the damned drain is clogged and I can’t afford a plumber.

Marley faked a smile, turned to her neighbor and said, “I’m fine, thanks, Carol. How are you?”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

    Hello Peggy,
Effective use of opening sentence to power the inciting incident and set the scene.

Great title “Not Really.” We all have things we are going through but keep it to ourselves. No use complaining we are just trying to get through the day. Good story!

Peggy- your writing is superb! You are able to capture so many thoughts and feelings in so few words. That is a gift

Your story moved me- it has me thinking- loved your symbolism – clogged drain… Clogged motions. Also made me realize it’s important to speak to the right people.-to unblock- be heard-

Thank you for your gift of 101 words

I have a similar story. But I did call Citi-Wide for my shower drain, and my wife is feeling great after beating cancer three times. But I’m still missing a tooth! Your stories are always great, my dear sister!

I love this story because it shows me that it’s ok to let it out and and tell people when they ask!
