“Mama, why do we pray?” the boy asks as she tucks his blankets.
“Because God loves you very much.”
“And Jesus?”
“Right, Jesus loves you too.”
“Where is he?”
“He’s everywhere. Here in your room, protecting you, and in your heart.”
“But I can’t see him?”
“He’s, well”—she stumbles—“it’s a mystery.”
“Like Blue’s Clues?”
“Sort of.” She tucks the blankets again, kisses his nose, and puts a hand on the dimmer.
“Mama?”
“Yes, baby?”
“What about the other man?”
“What other man…God?”
He nods, his small face serious.
“He’s not really a—oh, baby, it’s time to sleep.”
As parents, I suppose we all go through the stage of having to try to explain the unexplainable. It’s a true learning experience, though. This story is so typical of true life.
