“Hush, be still!”
I finished readjusting my nylons as uncomfortably and quietly as possible. “Yes sister; sorry!” My first day at Priory and I’m already fucking screwing it up. Considering my commitment to this life, I kneel prostrate to Dorothy, patron saint of Brides.
I’ve always admired these women: gentle, disciplined, powerful. Silent warriors of truth and peace, fiercely loving the world. My heart skips; my breath shortens.
I’m not ready. I’m not enough. I don’t belong.
Desperately, I look up to her face for refuge. Glorious Dorothy, standing in wisdom, serenity at her feet. Daring me, inaudibly, fondly. “Be. Still.”
It’s probably a dare that requires a miracle today.
“All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit quiet in a room alone.” – Blaise Pascal
Two of the most powerful words when uttered at the right time, “Be still.” I also really liked the way you depicted the Nuns, “Silent warriors of truth and peace.” A story I thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks for sharing.
Reminds me of my first day in Air Force Basic Training, only the exhortation to “Be. Still.” was neither soft nor inaudible.” Good story.
Thanks everyone! 🙂 So pleased you enjoyed it!
