OK, Cupid?

October 7, 2022 7 Comments

By David X. Lewis

He gives me a virtual wave on the dating site.

I wave back. He’s handsome. I cross my fingers that he’s eligible.

Our Zoom calls go well. He’s nice and apparently single. Though he lives abroad, it’s worth a shot.

I fly over for a weekend, stressing I’ll sleep in his guest room. (At least, that’s what I say.)

When I spot the red rose in arrivals, I recognise his tie and trilby.

My heart sinks. We’ve met before.

He’s a distant cousin who attended my grandfather’s 80th.

Question: if I don’t sleep in his guest room, will it be incest?

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Well. The royals usually marry cousins so perhaps it’s ok 🙂

Assuming ‘I ‘ is female, no problem if he’s distant cousin.
If ‘I’ is male – like the author – I don’t think gay relationships can be incest!
    Good little story.

Thanks to all for your comments. Good point, of course, about sex between distant cousins not being classed as incest. In my archive I’ll change “distant” to “long-lost”.
