One for Sorrow

May 3, 2026 4 Comments

By Anna Gebbie

Normally, Alice would never walk under a ladder. Bad luck, her granny always said. Nothing as specific as breaking your mother’s back, but a looming sort of fate that would follow you throughout your day, casting a spindly shadow.

But today, the sun was shining, and the ladder was straddling the whole pavement. Surely there was no need to walk on the road? The moment was over in a blink, and Alice continued on her way, leaving the last of her foolish superstition behind.

Three floors overhead, an unfortunate magpie crashed into the newly washed window and plummeted to the ground.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Oh no! A chilling reminder that just because we dodged the bad luck, it doesn’t mean everyone is in the clear!
