I look into your eyes, unwavering. You hold my gaze; that surprises me. I didn’t think you could surprise me any more. I had always hoped I could save us. I have improved. I used to think I could save the world. I leave that up to others now. Revised expectations.
But us, it shouldn’t have been so difficult. It wasn’t; it was impossible. And so, I save myself. You don’t drink; your religion forbids it. But me, I forbid myself nothing. I raise my glass; I wish you well. One for the road. One for the rest of my life.
