One Tree Lost

One Tree Lost

By Alison Silverstorm

It was one of those focus apps. Something about planting a tree and getting things done.

Being idle doesn’t sit well with workaholics.

The app told me to pick a tree and set a time limit. The challenge was to not close it, to focus on your work for the duration you set.

So I set one for thirty minutes and tried to get some studying done. I felt myself beginning to focus exactly when my Mum called.

Obviously, I had to answer the phone.

Almost immediately, a notification popped up.

The killer of your tree: Phone.

Strangely, I felt wistful.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

“Obviously, I had to answer the phone.” That is a great turning point.

Such a clever story – I love the idea of mindfulness (I practice it a lot) but I’ve seen how it can turn into something else that you just fail to fit into a busy day (like going to the gym) – you have a powerful insight here.
