Only The Females Bite

January 23, 2026 5 Comments

By Thomas Williams

They’d been together for two nights in the hotel and this was the first time he had really seen her. The humidity of the Sumatran summer overpowered the air conditioning unit that rattled as it whirred. He’d acknowledged her at night, though, groaning and stirring as she’d tasted the salty sweetness of sweat on his skin.

She watched him now, scratching, turning over, stopping as he spotted her. Rising slowly as not to alarm her, he strode forward, his right hand raised. The slap thudded into the wall but she was too swift, even with a full belly, and buzzed away.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Nice. After 1st read – 2nd read makes things look so much different.

Great story and ending. I needed to read it twice to appreciate it fully.

    Well, I don’t remember a story written from a mosquito’s perspective—very nicely done!
