War returns him to his country, her to the air force. She has a downward shot on the cockpit. Scenes rush before her eyes. The humiliating slaps on the face during lovemaking, the choking when she refused his advances, the open flirtation with other women, and her recent legal defeat.
He slides to the left; she dives keeping an unerring lock on the cockpit. A primordial instinct makes her take the pip of the cockpit. He throws out the airbrakes, leaving her low and ahead of him. Both return to his air base where he receives a hero’s welcome with promotion.
To paraphrase an old saying: “War AND LOVE is hell!” Good story.
