Pastoral

May 16, 2021 6 Comments

By Jacky Lang

She’d hated the city for forever. People and cars were everywhere. Yelling neighbors, screeching sirens, and racing engines invaded her brain all day and night. She fantasized about privacy.

After scrimping and saving, and denying herself every luxury, she was able to break free. It was a second-hand mobile home on barely an acre, but it was hers.

A chilly morning, and she was digging up beets before the snow came and turned them to mush. She dismissed the flash of pain behind her eye.

She slept the winter away alone in the garden. By spring she’d merged with the soil.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

    Jacky,

Nicely done piece about a woman with a goal and the sacrifices she makes to achieve it. So sad she didn’t have more time to enjoy the environment she enjoys.
