Peach Pie

June 29, 2025 10 Comments

By Ann Yuan

To survive, Mother teaches us to fake death: stiffen the body and stick out the tongue. The cat doesn’t eat dead meat.

A whiff of peach pie creeps in. Keep practising, she says before she runs out of the cave. We imagine Mother hauls back a wedge of golden pastry doused with syrup. Mouths watering, bellies rumbling, we decide whoever stays motionless for the longest time gets the largest bite.

Outside, she screams—a pitch to rip our skin. We lie still, limbs straight up as if seeking a motherly hug. We play the best corpses. We know how to survive.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.
