I found it one day, lying wedged between the pavement and the curb. I took it. All day I looked at the penny from different angles, feeling guilty. I rolled it between all of my fingers until they were green. This was my punishment. The stain on my fingers stayed three days while I waited for someone to notice. I felt sure they’d know I was a thief. That night, I took it back to the spot where I’d found it and placed it back exactly as it was. I shed the green skin on the way home in the rain.

Redemption arrives to the pure in heart, and time heals all wounds. Trasie, this piece yearns to fill the middle of a short story, where a character grows from lowliness to being great. It is a true turning point.

As rauthor60 suggests, it’s well written – just not stand-alone.
