Mitten-clad hands shake slow-burning sparklers, dazzling light emanating from hundreds of tiny particles, a product of the chemical reaction between potassium perchlorate and dextrin—a small, contained, and joyous combustion of sorts.
The same pestering ache crawls up my left leg as I try to slow my heartbeat, take a couple measured deep breaths—they’re just fireworks.
The clock strikes midnight, and complete madness erupts. Explosions, laughter, and cheering make up the cacophony of welcoming the new year. Clenching my teeth, my hand instinctively shoots to my leg, only to again be reminded there’s nothing there anymore.
Well written. For me, “Phantom” is a chilling reminder of how fireworks can affect soldiers who see action.
Thank you so much for your kind words.
