She was late for something more important and left her phone on the dresser. It was my own fault; I shouldn’t have looked. A single picture. When I saw the tenderness in their eyes, their unalloyed joy at just being together, I knew we were finished.
Eventually even the deepest cracks mend and we agree to talk; just coffee, neutral ground. How have we been and are we keeping well, have we seen anything of so and so and did we hear about so and so and so and so. Respectful, cowardly, avoiding what I have lost and she has found.
Nice one.
Outstanding story. I like the repetitive use of “so” because we, the readers, already know the details…we are “insiders” because we have had the same conversations ourselves.
A story true to heart.
A story that resonates with many… phones beckon us with possible secrets but do we really want to know them?
Bittersweet and understated. This is a Winner!
