Piped Dreams

August 3, 2023 2 Comments

By Melissa Jornd

Precision. Skill. Countless nights mastering various piping tips. Hundreds of hours spent squeezing bags and perfecting seven types of designs.

It all comes down to this.

I cut the cake’s elegant corner where I’ve piled four vibrantly pink flowers. The mouthwatering smells of vanilla and melted sugar permeate the room.

I deliver the slice. Eyes wide, the judge touches the biggest rose.

Nailed it! She’s always loved pink. I knew this year—

“NOOOOO!” She smashes the flower, licks her hand. Cries. “WANT PURPLE! PURPLE, DADDY! PUUUR-PLEEEEE!”

I look at my teammate, aghast.

She laughs and kisses me. “Maybe next year, chef.”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

    Hello Melissa,
You captured perfectly the snobbish attitude of my least favorite judge on a cake-decorating challenge TV show–and also, I’m thinking, the feelings of the poor maligned contestant.
So well done! Kudos to you.

No handshake, but what a great story you have woven here. Thank you.
