Possessive

July 9, 2022 10 Comments

By J I Black

Life as a couch is never dull.

My cushions hide secrets.

The corpse, my ex, planned to replace me with a futon.

“Piece of junk,” Mike yelled when his iPhone fell under my cushions. He pinged my springs unkindly.

I gobbled him up and spat out his phone.

The coroner ruled misadventure.

Dave, with no sense of smell, got me cheap. He pushed me into our new abode, unaware of my odiferous stench.

Dave’s girlfriend whined about my divine sagginess.

“I love my couch. It stays.”

She flounced out.

What can I say? I’m a possessive possession, and now, Dave’s loveseat.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.
