Alone, Abby reached for her sweater while sitting on the bench in the cavernous hallway of the courthouse. She felt exposed. Cold.
How did this happen? She was promised protection from the domestic abuse program. Everyone, even family, believed she died in the car accident.
Now, as the only eyewitness to the local First Community Bank robbery, her new simple life just became complicated.
Suddenly, the courtroom doors flung open, and Abby sprang to her feet.
“You’re free to go, Miss. He took the plea deal,” announced the bailiff, wearing a malevolent grin.
Abby exhaled. “I can return to work then?”
The writing is good and descriptive. There’s a clear beginning, middle and end, but I don’t get the connection to the bailiff’s malevolent grin. I’m left wondering why there’s is a suggestion of evil from the bailiff?
Me too.
