Proximity

Proximity

By Frankie Sturm

“What are you doing?” I asked.

She adjusted herself on the couch and smiled. “Thinking of the immortality of crabs.”

It wasn’t a helpful answer. I knew less than I did before. In fact, the scope of my confusion had only expanded.

“Why in the world are you talking about crabs?”

She’d traversed a continent. Proximity was supposed to facilitate communication. No more dropped calls, no slipshod connections.

Wrong. Static was never the problem. Answers beget questions. Not to mention the questions themselves.

“In my country that’s how we say we are doing nothing.”

She doesn’t know I’m allergic to shellfish.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

What we have here, friends, is a monumental lack of communication. Liked it!
