Pulp Friction

July 13, 2026 11 Comments

By Nina Miller

“Sweetest of fruits with the thickest of skin,” said Toby, peeling a sumo orange.

A slice was placed into my outstretched hand. One arm steered, one eye on his handsome face.

I devoured it. Let its sweetness cover my lips. Let juices slide past fruity pulp as I chewed.

“Good, right? Expensive, but worth it,” said Toby, holding another slice. “More?”

I wanted everything. The fruit, the man, and a life together. Shouldn’t have stayed friends when I’d fallen in love.

“I’m good,” I told him, hoping that lie gave time for my heart to harden so I wouldn’t turn bitter.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

The orange analogy was really clever: peel it back and reveal the nuances.
The specificity of a “Sumo” orange was a great visually and tactilely intentional choice.

So difficult to stand your ground without getting lost. Boundaries are important in that regard.

Clever title and wonderful (metaphorical) first line! I was intrigued from the get go.

Cheers to thick skin when our hearts ache. Congratulations!
