Remnants of My Heart

June 28, 2024 4 Comments

By Joanne Macias

Looking around the room, I noticed your locket resting on the dresser. It was the only thing left behind.

The once silver chain was now stained black. The locket catch, now precariously loose, held on for dear life like you were not able to.

A tempest of emotions knocked the wind out of my lungs. Indecision crashed over me, rendering me helpless to decide which memory I should preserve.

Should I open it to see your face one more time and risk destroying it? Or should I keep it shut and risk forgetting your finer details but keeping the piece intact?

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

    Hello Joanne,
Splendid ! The use of a tarnished locket as a metaphor refecting a tarnished relationship was genius.

Well done. Nice use of the locket for imagery, and the decision the narrator must make. And excellent to end with a question.
