Bytes and bits are my millennial benchmarks. Mario and Pac-Man were kindergarten friends on the family computer that had a smaller memory than I did.
Game Boy was my portable soulmate as a pimpled teen, Grand Theft Auto a focus for my anger when my parents split. Wikipedia and online porn enhanced my college years. Laptop, tablet—I grew thinner like my screens thanks to online workouts.
Minecraft was launched the same year as my daughter. I’ll teach her not to measure herself in likes or emojis, because I’ve learned to dote on live-action relationships and leave the bytes at work.
