After the ball finally dropped, with the bright streamers down, the party hats strewn, the glasses empty, the confetti lodged in deep sofa cushions, the Bing Crosby album silent, the champagne flutes lonely on the mantle, they went outside. They left it all, the party come and gone, their rental house now in complete disarray, to break up on the first day of the year. The kiss felt so hollow in the midnight cheer, and both knew that feeling would never be fully erased from their lips. Better to resolve to find a warmer touch in the chill of future winters.
i love this story, especially that last line. beautiful. 🙂
The excessive run-on sentences work well to illustrate a long and chaotic New-Year’s party. Would perhaps have preferred those first two sentences accentuated and turned into a single string, then punctuated more violently by the break-up. Would also avoid the (double) use of ‘feel’, and show instead of tell on the last part. Interesting piece though.
Another somewhat gloomy story; but this one holds out hope for the future. I liked it.
