Everyone in the village knew Rose was gifted, dropping in for a cuppa so she could read their tea leaves. Truth was, Rose was only gifted at reading people (and keeping up with village gossip). She had ‘predicted’ Ethel’s husband’s discrepancy, Mary’s hospitalization, and pipe smoking Herbert’s house fire.
On that fateful morning, Rose brewed her usual cup of loose-leaf Yorkshire tea, sipping as she watched her daily talk show. She didn’t foresee her own rather swift demise.
Had she studied the leaves in more depth, she would have noticed the skeleton lurking in the dregs of her favourite China cup.
Well written! I love the ending.
I love this! A charlatan whose true abilities might have saved her. Very clever!
Wonderful use of diction. “ Discrepancy” is brilliant.
Enjoyed this. Great title too.
