“You’re staying here, with us,” the boys announced, pausing in their work.
He laughed, amused.

Nice story! I am actually quite new to this genre, and I think the subtlety was lost on me. Could you please help me understand what the significance was of “replacing needs with wants”, and why being accustomed to their wants caused the result? (Is it something like they got too spoiled?)
