Runaways

By Paula Wescott

‘Twas her heritage that attracted me to her. She were like me. The ‘pure-bloods’ who thought they was superior called us half-breeds, but we didn’t let ‘em bother us.

Or maybe it was her coat. ‘Twas real nice. Silky but warm lookin’. A deep chocolate shade that matched her eyes. She looked classy, like she belonged in a wealthy family, not on the run kickin’ with me in the hood.

I nudged the gift I’d gotten for her towards her. I thought she’d be pleased.

“You crazy, Gus?” she barked. “That crap is poison! Chocolate’s for humans, not dogs, you dummy!”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Great voice in this story. When the MC said the word “like”, I heard love. I’m sure when he/she was chided by the lady-love for giving the chocolate, the MC took the harsh words as music ? to his or her ears, so obviously was the love ? from the MC’s end. Good job!

Paula, this was really sweet! At first I thought some sort of dystopian tale of racism and ostracism, but you spun the “tail” back around wagging! Very nice!

Thank you for putting a smile on my face this morning. It’s even more fun to read it a second and third time, admiring the clever twist at the end.

This really is how voice is portrayed. Something I’m trying hard to work on. And nice illusion. Kudos.
