
He flicked the OFF DUTY switch without looking, pulled onto the wet street. He tried not to think about the girl he had just dropped off. Her unpaid fare was still on the meter. He’d need to make it good with the company when he got back to the barn.
When he’d picked her up he hadn’t noticed she wore nothing beneath the too-large raincoat, hadn’t noticed the livid bruise on the side of her face. He was halfway across the Verrazano Narrows when he realized the girl was a charity case.
By then it’d been too late to turn around.
