Saturdays

December 6, 2021 12 Comments

By JJ Collins

Saturdays in November have always been my favorite. Long walks through the autumn woods, a tickle of winter teasing itself as the breeze begins to bite. It nips the tops of our ears and makes a million leaves dance in a wash of crimson and tattered gold. The earthen smell gives way to a deeper musk as the weather changes in earnest; a transition that bespeaks a gentle death.

“Nature’s changing of the guard,” Dad always says.

Said, I remind myself. I draw a breath in silent remonstration, exhale into emptiness as echoes fade to stillness. It’s what he always said.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Bravo. You captured the season and how the senses evoke memories. Beautifully done, and very moving. An experience I have experienced several times in my life.

Beautiful. It is so much more, but I honestly can’t think of words to describe how it made me feel. Excellent job.

Yes. My Daddy’s gone too, but I can’t remember anything he said. It’s been over half a century now, and I still miss him. I was only 16 (the oldest of four) when he was killed.
